Question

Help answer this question below.

What could cause all three brake lights to go out? I've already checked the fuses and the bulbs, and everything is cool there, so what else? If it helps, I'm driving a 1987 Toyoty Camry LE.

The brake light switch is probably bad. Either it isn't activating when you depress the brake pedal, or it is shorting and blowing the bulbs. Replacing it isn't bad, but it will give you a crick in the neck. Unless Toyota has some different system to keep you from doing it yourself (which they seem to do a lot), it is just a matter of pulling a cotter key and pin from the back of the brake pedal where the arm from the master cylinder attaches and removing the switch that sits between the two parts. Then you put the new one in and reassemble. Get on your back under the dash and take a look at it to see if that is what is there. Toyota seems really good at coming up with ways to keep backyard mechanics from doing their own work. Also, even though its a quick job, its easier to do it if you take the time to pull out the driver's side seat first.
