What are the pros and cons of a wooden mortar and pestle (as opposed to marble, ceramic, porcelain, etc.)?

No pros as far as I'm concerned. Mine is stoneware and I love it. Use it and it goes right into the dishwasher.

it depends on what your grinding. Wood is good when used with explosives and flammables. Wood doesn't make sparks. Wooden shovels are used to shovel gun powder.

The main con of a wooden mortar and pestle would be if you were you grinding herbs or drugs, they would pick up much of what you were grinding. You would lose some and then would mix the flavors with other herbs. As for the other choices you listed I would pick the marble or porcelain for ease of changing herbs.

Wood is gross and harbours bacteria :S I only use ceramic or stone. Ceramic will do the job just fine, unless you want to look fancy.
