People do it all the time. They don't want to waste a plate on something that can be eatin in 1 minute. There's no point really. Or even if someone is in a hurry and don't want to deal with have a plate. It's just convenient.

Kind of gross, but I don't look or talk to them at that time. I don't want them to look up. +5

That's very odd. I would think it was pretty unappetizing to eat over a waste basket! It was probably just easy for them, but there was certainly a better way of handling that.
-
I'll admit I have done that occasionally at home, but there are many things I'll do at home I won't do in public, and in this case I'd have grabbed a napkin and paper plate.
-
It depends on what is in the trash can. If there are maggots and flys all around, I would draw the line. If it is just paper products, well not too bad, but really stupid to watch.

Miss Manners recommends eating with plates, flatware and a napkin even when you are alone. . When people eat at work they generally are eating alone even if we two or more happen to be eating at the same time. Certainly eating over a sink or wastepaper basket is kind of unpleasant to do. Or to be seen doing. That said, eating at work is about as far from dining as you can get. There is not much pleasure to be had from it.

I hope the wastebasket is emptied daily. Otherwise I would object to perishable food, and particularly seafood, being left to decompose/stink/draw flies. Other than that, I don't find it all that terrible.
-
Hooray for wasting more dead tree on something as insignificant as a shrimp roll! Let's get grossed out when someone just goes straight to the source instead of the once-providing-us-with-oxygen-and-lowering-the-albedo-of-the-planet middlemen!
-
I love that about guys. If it makes things easy, they do it. Who cares what miss manners thinks.

What he should have done is shove the whole thing in his mouth and avoid making a mess!!
