How would you try to resolve the problem, if you had got into trouble through gossiping?

I dont gossip but sometimes you say something not intending it to be gossip and the person you told changing things and makes it gossip! At this point if someone approaches me and ask me why I started something I handle it the only way I think is best. Honesty! I tell them what I said why I said it and how I feel about the way things turned out. So far no one has accused me of starting trouble and gossip for this reason... then again I am not a child.
