Why does a ball bounce better on a wooden floor than on a carpet? (make answer understandable for kids ages 10-11)

    The longer the pile on the carpet, the less it will bounce. The ball loses energy brushing against all those fibres just as it takes more energy to push your way though a crowd.
    knee high fibres and it would get stuck in them before reaching the floor.

    As silly as it may sound, could you just explain that a carpet is softer than a wooden floor so it 'cushions' (not really sure how to put that bit) so it doesnt bounce as high

    The carpet is soft, and the wood is harder, making the ball easier to bounce.
