providing the essentials (food, drink, restroom), entertaining the guests, making them feel at home, etc. have some fun activities planned.

Patience, the ability to be charming & multi-task to serve food/drinks & be a social butterfly so to speak. I'm personally if more than a party of 4 to 6 very uncomfortable with it myself. But thats just me :)

A good host or hostess is easily able to make his/her guests feel at home. He/she will provide them with plenty of good food, good drink, fascinating conversation, and other interesting guests. Just as an aside, if the host believes his guest has imbibed too much, he will arrange safe transport home for them. It is better to keep this from happening in the first place by providing only a drink or two before the meal.
