How do i get the dvd/cd drive to register that there is a disc inserted i am running windows xp home edition

You mean there is no drive letter or that the disc does not work? If it's the former then goto computer managment and removable storage in admin tools and right click on the drive and right click to assign letter. If it's the former it could be a faulty cable or requires driver.firmware update
