What do you think was the cause for the rapid population growth at the start of the 18th century and continuing until the present 21st century? If you go to wikipedia or any other source you can find graphs for population rate for the past few millenia.

We made breakthroughs in medicine which meant we had less infant mortality and greater longevity BUT we (like some developing countries with improving standards of living now), failed to slow our reproduction rate in line with this improvement. It takes time for a species to catch up, as it were, with it's own success in survival. The urge to breed to the max. wears off only after people have seen for some time that their kids (if they only have one or two), really will survive OK.
