  • Doubtful. At least, I wouldn't. It isn't the common name, just as we don't call Mark Twain "Samuel" and we don't call Woody Allen "Mr. Konigsberg" and we don't call Tom Cruise "Mr. Mapother", but I don't see how someone would be offended by usage of the person's "proper" name.
  • Perhaps it might take away a little bit of the fantasy.
  • Why don't you just ask both of them....
  • I doubt they would care, but J.R.R sounds a lot cooler than saying The Lord of the Rings by John Roger Richard Tolkien (example only, not really his name I don't think)
  • If it makes sense in the conversation, I'd assume it's OK. Otherwise, someone may not know who "John" is, seeing as that's a common name.
