  • A thesis is written for a Master's degree and a Ph.D degree. Masters usually take about 1-2 years and Ph.D usually takes 1-3 years.
  • A thesis is an original piece of work. The author must advance an original position on a topic of his choice through extensive research and reading. Although it may not be an entirely original topic, the student is supposed to find an original angle on an existing topic, and produce a piece of work not already found in existing literature, and produce an argument not already found. In the UK a thesis is a 3 year project produced to gain a Phd and is typically 150-200 pages long. So the research needed to write it, and writing it itself, is why it takes so long to produce. In the US I believe the word mostly refers to what we call a dissertation - a study done during a bachelors and masters degree and is very much shorter and done along side classes. Perhaps only 10,000-15,000 words. The terms are interchangeable though and different subjects and colleges have differnt standards. This really doesn't take that long to write at all, compared with a Phd thesis.
