In Asian cultures it is the aggressor who should allow an "escape hatch" of types for his victim. It is honorable to allow a person to back off with dignity. In America we tend to rip off someone's head and spit down their neck for the fun of it all. The true wise person leaves themselves as well as those they defend against, a nice easy escape hatch. One is less likely to suffer bites that way.
