We had a good program in place here in the USA till the Reagan deregulation and privatization mania took hold. Since then, we have slashed the Food and Drug Administration's inspection staff by over 90% and allowed food factories to contract out inspections to private firms who lose their contract if they find a problem. So now our people just die, and that finds the problem. We've had an enormous upswing in food related illness and death in the past decade. We are also suffering from widespread obesity and chronic heart and circulatory problems thanks to factory food full of hydrogenated oils and fats, chemical additives and high-fructose corn syrup sweeteners.

No, not here in the US. The food and drug administration (FDA) keeps a close eye on the foods sold to the public.
