There are a number of lines of evidence that can be used to support the contention that Earth is round. Some of these date back to ancient times. First of all, the ancient Greeks correctly recognized that lunar eclipses are caused by the Earth casting its shadow on the Moon. They also noted that Earth's shadow on the Moon is round (http://www.pbase.com/shubhakamath/eclipse http://www.pbase.com/henkbril/20060907 http://www.spaceweather.com/eclipses/15may03/koppejan1.jpg). Therefore Earth must be round.

The next line of evidence is that the angle of the Sun above the horizon is dependent on ones latitude. This is something that would only work if Earth were round. Flat surfaces would have the sun at the same angle above them at any given time regardless of latitude. Eratosthenes even used this line of evidence to make a pretty good estimate of the size of the Earth back in the third century BC (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eratosthenes#Measurement_of_the_Earth).

Then there is the way things disappear below the horizon. Ships sink below the horizon at a consistent distance from the viewer. If Earth were square (cubic), then the distance from the viewer at which a ship sinks below the horizon would depend upon how close one is to an edge. Along with this line of evidence is the fact that no one has even claimed to find an edge to the Earth. Thus, once again, we come to the conclusion that Earth is round.

Finally there are the photos of Earth that have been taken from space (http://www.solarviews.com/raw/earth/bluemarblewest.jpg). There have been numerous pictures of the Earth taken by various space probes and mission. All of them show that Earth is round.

I find the evidence that Earth is round overwhelming. In order to believe otherwise, one must believe that the entire scientific community is part of a coverup. I don't believe that. So, Earth is round. You, of course can dismiss all of this evidence if you wish, but then you need to provide evidence that actually refutes this evidence. So, westoncampbell, here is my evidence. Where is yours?

If we can view other planets from earth, with a telescope, and they are all roundish (as opposed to square), what is the probability that we would be the only square planet? Very little I would say.
Plus there are photos from satellites that show the earth is round.

I can't. I can't prove to you any facts; indeed, the only things I can prove to myself are basic axioms. So I'm going to go rogue and break the rules of your challenge.

I could say that the Rocky Mountains are made of diamonds visible only to me - but what would it accomplish? Nothing. Hence we have such cool stuff as Occam's Razor and the Burden of Proof. Thus far, all our emprical evidence suggests that the Earth is roughly spherical. Granted inductive logic isn't always valid, but all our experience in life suggests that this is true.

So, I offer a counter challenge: Give some valid evidence that the Earth is square, and then we'll talk.

If the earth was square, then rainbows would not appear curved, they'd appear straight.

The horizon would appear completely straight as well.

When we look at the sun, the moon, or distant planets through a telescope (or go visit a planetarium) you can observe all the planets are spheres.

It doesn't make sense to believe that we live on the only planet that would not be spherical.

And wouldn't Columbus have fallen off the earth on his voyage?

On a cubical plante (or square) gravity would not be equally spread over the whole planet.
That would only happen on a spherical planet, such as earth!
Gravity over the face of earth is the same everywhere.
Therefore the earth must be round.

Is there a price involved in proving this to you?
A bottle of good red will do me fine, thanks :)

I think all those space photographs pretty much disproves this theory of yours.

But...Come to think of it. If the earth is not square then where did the "four corners of the earth" come from?

Get to an elevated position - look out - notice the curve of the earth - continue doing this in multiple locations around the world until you are statistically convinced.

The earth is round, square ,geoid, sphereical, triangular, rectangular- Throught quantum physics you would see the earth as any and every shape based on your perception and vantage point- In other dimensions we may percieved as any shape possible or not at all. Really the earth is round becuase the evidence we have collected from our universe and our dimension point to a round(Goied Sphereical) Earth. Facts and evidence are really just observations with little truth attached- Yet in our universe and our dimension the best percieved observation of our planet proves that it is round(geoid Sphere) The fact that you have no evidence of your own and ask others to disprove you- well thats like saying I am god prove me wrong- you can't, so give credit to your ideas, not just discredit others-THAT IS SCIENCE!!!!!!!!! Credit yourself, don't have others try and discredit you, there is no way to progress, you will just be moving in circles!(BAd pun but had to do it!)

One day when I was much younger I made up a song called the world is a donut, based on pictures of what the world would look like with various different shapes. I was singing this song on the way home from school and a kid threw an orange at me. Thats when it hit me. The orange I mean. But nobody likes it if you say things that make no sense.

I believe that there is sufficient proof based on the observations of orbiting spacecraft that the Earth is round... if you only look at it within the limits of human perceptions of three-dimensional space.

However there have been revolutionary theories and discoveries that defy conventional wisdom, like the Earth revolving around the Sun or Germ Theory (and the resulting advances in sanitation).

Unfortunately, the burden of proof lies with the one defying conventional wisdom and accepted theory; you.

Look at the horizon. You will see curvature if you look far enough at a height. You would not see this on a square or cube.

Also, look at the moon. It has a rounded shadow on it(when not full) That is the shadow of the Earth.

Scientists say there are many parallel universes. Some say our reality is shaped by our perception. So then I have a question, if in your universe the earth is square , is your sun square too?

Perhaps the quran can help? If the earth was flat or "square" as you say then the transitioning of the night and day would be much quicker and would "snap" to morning and night (there is a picture of a square earth, that will help you understand) . However, as the quran states that it is a sign that the morning and night slowly transition, this is only possible is the earth was spherical and would be impossible if the earth was flat or a cube. So much for the guy that posted something about the Bible, take that christian!

look!! person... oh whatever you are...

If the earth was square, wouldn't you be able to see mount Everest from your window?

When i was 12 , i saw a boat floating away. As i saw this boat floating, i noticed that it starting to descend behind somewhere. if the earth was square, i would still see the boat, but it would get smaller. The boat didn't just smaller. it lower and lower until it disappeared, and no, it didn't sink.

Also, if the earth was square, we would have different time changes and different hours right now. It does not make sense how this can be possible of the earth being round.

    ooo, girl!!!!
