My dog used to get hot spots.
You need a special shampoo and cream.
Find a new vet. One that isn't an idiot and will get you what you need.

Actually, I'm shocked the vet suggested to put knee socks on the dog. Generally when we see hot spots at our hospital, we want the owner's to keep the dog from licking and chewing at the spot, but allow air to dry it out. Best to keep it uncovered, cleaned out, and VERY dry. If the vet hasn't already, shave the hair around the hot spot and clean it out with an antiseptic rinse. Dry it well, and put the dog in an e-collar to prevent further licking.

    Good luck!

Is is because of allergies? because if it is it will be there until what ever they are allergic to is gone. My golden has the worst time with hers.

I'm a CVT and must agree with the other guy who said your Vet is giving you poor advice. I don't know what breed/size dog you have. However, regardless of all that, I kinda need to know where the hot spot is and how bad it is. If the spot is around the dogs ankle, you might want to consider the spray. But there must be a reason for the chewing!! Allergies? A thorn or a foxtail? Honestly, until you can figure the cause out... the best thing you can do is SHAVE CLIP CLEAN the entire area. Then once all the bacteria breeding hair is gone, dilute Iodine with water so that it looks like ice tea color. Soak the shaved area in the dilution for 5 minutes or so. MOST IMPORTANT. Dry the area off with a hair dryer and when completely dry, wrap it up. Not with a fricken sock, but with gauze and vet wrap. The key is to let it heal and maybe a wrap isin't the best idea. The only other one is the CONE/Lampshade . Let me know if I can help you further. GOTTA FIND OUT WHAT IS CAUSING THE HOT SPOT!! Melissa
