football came from the sport soccer. in my country soccer is called futbol (foot-boll). just like evolution, after a while people got bored with soccer and started to switch the rules up. this was frowned upon by soccer people, so rugby was born. i can't remember but i think american football came from rugby.

Because football has roots in Rugby, which in turn evolved from kicking games. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_American_football In much of the world football became synonomous with soccer, where American-style football is known as, of all things, American football, or futbol americano, or other variation.
