To what level? The demand for healthcare is almost infinite. The more money you have, the greater the base level of treatment you can offer. But there will always be some extreme treatments that will be too expensive. This applies whether the scheme is publicly or privately funded. The baseload of normal cases will always be treated, but there will be choices at the extremes. How many cycles of IVF will an infertile woman be offered? How many people will be offered expensive cancer drugs of limited efficacy? How many cosmetic or near-cosmetic operations will it fund? The question is not "is it enough?" but "what level of care will it fund?".

Apparantly not... Seems to be that while prices and costs are rising, the budget is not rising by the same level, so in effect an already stretched NHS is going to be taking even more budget cuts through to 2011. The management aren't happy, and although I guess it is up to the management to make the best out of a bad situation - that's what they are being paid for, they can only do so much with what they have.

This is the biggest reason why I was against the war in Iraq - just think how that money could have been spent more wisely.
