An au-pair is a kind of live-in nanny/maid combination, usually hired by busy career women who don't have time to wash, feed and bathe their own children. The au-pair does still have time off, she is not on call 24/7. It is basically a mixture of household and childcare chores with accommodation thrown in, and the vast majority of au-pairs are female. In the film world, they are also blonde, beautiful and Swedish and irresistable to the man of the house, with raunchy results! edit - I should have mentioned that the accommodation IS the payment for the domestic help the au-pair provides (in practice there is probably a little bit of pocket money on the side), it is not an occupation that is paid in the conventional sense as I may have made it sound in the paragraph above. This is why au-pairs are also almost exclusively from overseas - they are girls who are coming to a country principally to experience another culture and help develop language skills and so on, it is not a career choice.

An au pair is a young girl (seldom boy) who lives in a family and helps them with household works. An au pair girl shall be treated more as an equal part of the family, not as a servant girl (like a maid/nanny girl), and the girl shall not be required to wear a uniform. an au-pair is a cleaner and a nanny all in 1 who lives with the family my step-mum did it when she was younger,i think it's a french word.

When I was married....my dream come true:)...kidding, kidding, kidding. Actually, someone (who lives with you) to take care of the kids and do a little housework. I never had kids, so was not tempted.
