  • Start a very small business. It ain't much, but it beats starving. During the Depression, folks who were really down and out would go to the markets in the morning and buy a box of apples, which they would carry to a place where they knew people would be wanting lunch or snacks and sell them individually for a small profit. They would hopefully make enough to eat for the day and to buy another box the next day. Selling newspapers was another way to get a meal. You might be able to make a few dollars making sandwiches to sell, or picking up cans to recycle or what have you. I don't know what is available where you are, but there is probably still day labor in agriculture. Its hard dirty work, but it pays bills. When I was a teenager, people who needed work would hang out on the square in the morning and whoever needed laborers for the day would drive by and pick them up for the day. There was always a need for people to pick up hay in the field or work in tobacco. There is always work that machines can't do. But in the intervening years, people didn't want to work that hard anymore, so equipment manufacturers came up with machines to pick up hay, and the tobacco market has completely dried up in this country. You can't make a living in tobacco anymore. However, many local farmers have switched back to the time honored truck farming for the farmers market, and there isn't any machine to pick tomatoes.
  • If you can afford it, find some regular volunteer work and put it on your resume. It shows that you're making the most of your time.
  • Be a leech, find a spouse to take care of you or sell drugs.
  • Still looking. I've been stated temporarily disabled which puts me in a class without money. It's tough because I'm wondering if I will be on a cot at the Salvation Army. I guess that would be an alternative. +4
  • Cut your losses fast. Eliminate outflow. Cancel rent, utilities, sell car, move in with friend or relative, tell them only for a short time while you regroup. Go to those that you would assist if the situation were different. Be humble. Walk straight. Get resume on job search sites. Get out and be in front of people. This is your plan, make it work.
