Try to figure out how do get where I need to be.

I used to live in South Florida years ago with no car and I did this a lot. It can be a real nighmare because often the only way to fix it is to go to the end of the line and start over. Ugh. Makes me really appreciate my car.

I took the wrong bus yesterday, but the distances here are not very long. I got off at the next stop, walked across the road and took another bus back to where I came from.

Been there, done that. Told the driver, and he said to relax (which I couldn't do anything else) and let me stay on until I could catch the right bus. +4

Ask people what to do if I was not familiar with the bus line and it's policy. I have done this and the driver made sure I got to the bus I needed.

that I wouldnt be to comfortable with, Id probably panic a bit, and try to get off straight away, and then ask the bus driver, what number bus did I need to catch to get back to where I had come from, Id be trying to look for a stop going in the opposite direction........... a bit complicated, some bus stops have buses that go too a multituide of different places...........

I did that many years ago after drinking and closing a local pub, not wanting to drive home and my friends had long gone I hopped on a bus and fell asleep, the next morning I woke up on the same bus empty but at the car barns and was going through the wash getting ready for the next shift...

Go the wrong place

If I am in no hurry to go anywhere specific, I would just go along to where the bus would take me, visit the place and then come back to my original place.
