Why is it “losers” are stereotyped as living in their parents’ basement? What happened to their old room?

Their parents converted the old room to a study after the 'loser' moved out. Of course now that the 'loser' is back, the only room available is the basement. On the other hand, the 'loser' probably wanted the basement because there was more privacy.
