While I'm born and raised in the Southern U.S., I do not have the stereotypical Southern drawl. Does anyone else not have the accent that is associated with where you're from?

  • Same as yours. I am from Virginia, but I live in Northern VA. and a lot of people don't realize that there is a big difference between Northern and Southern VA. I am to no end irritated by people who ask where my Southern accent is? My standard reply is that I left it at home.

I am from north east England and my wife's from the north west, so my accent gradually changed as a result. Then we lived for 20+ years in south west England where the accent's very different. This softened my vowel sounds a lot. I still sound obviously northern, but people often have difficulty in identifying which part of the north.

Is that missing Southern drawl really missing, or is it just not noticeable to you?
I never considered myself as having the drawl, but many years ago a Californian said he could hear the honeysuckle and magnolia blossoms drippin from my mouf.
I am a native Texan - family here since 1850's.
