In Deadwood, Dakota Territory, on the 2nd of August 1876 (133 years ago, today) at the age of 39, while playing poker, James Butler Hickok was shot in the back of the neck and killed instantly by a young man named Jack McCall. McCall was tried and acquitted, he was later arrested, retried and found guilty. McCall was hanged on 1 March 1877.

A feller named Jack McCall shot Wild Bill in Deadwood, SD. Wild Bill was supposedly holding a poker hand of Aces and Eights at the time (later called a "dead Man's Hand"). He usually sat with his back to the wall and had neglected to do this on this day.
