actually, leaving a bit of space between your fingers isn't a bad thing, I saw that on a sport's science video talking about pro swimmers plan to breathe every 3-4 strokes, any less than that and you'll get less O2, which means less energy practice your breathing by gliding (w/ only gentle flutter kick)on your side for a couple seconds every three strokes point your toes for flutter kick to help you move your whole legs from the hip, not just the lower leg from the knee
