Priori Incantatem is a spell that occurs when brother wands meet. This means the two wands share the same core. Battling with such wands causes the tips of the wands to connect and the duelers then fight a battle of wills. When Harry and Voldemort released spells at the same time this happened. It wasn't that Harry actually fought Voldemort, Harry just had a stronger will in the end.
