I have a Fender Squire Strat and I have no idea how to work the distortion to get it to sound like a good rock guitar. Right now it just sounds like a plugged in acoustic. Do I need a pedal or what do I need to do to give it a great sound?

Sorry, a new guitar. The pickups in a Squire are not up to high gain. You might need a guitar with humbuckers.

What amp you running it through? Obviously a begginer, you might be using a Fender 15g amp. Turn the volume only up to at most three to start, set your EQ (hi mid lo), gain knob all up,k lug in, and hit the channel select button in to go off the distorted channel into the overdrive. Check your guitar's knobs to get sound. Rock on!

Distortion does not come from the guitar. It comes from the amp. It all depends what type of amp you have. Turn your volume knob all the way down and then crank up the gain knob. now you can turn up the volume and most likely have distortion.
