  • I don't think it "matters" as much as it used to, but I still love it.
  • It matters to me! Poems are nuggets of insight, and we need insight more than ever in a busy world where people don't seem to have time to share an evening of dialogue with each other.
  • I'm not sure how much it "mattered" in the past but I love it and I am sure that there will always be people who appreciate good poetry. A better question might be, "In the 21st Century does good, really good, poetry exist?" How much of what is being touted as good now will really stand the test of time?
  • Yes it matters. The most beautiful poetry is the kind you can share privately with a loved one. And I'm sure there is a lot of that going on even today. I hope I'm right or it is going to be one dark bleak place to live this world of ours that we call home. No matter how small the effort, encourage us to express ourselves. It’s we amateurs who keep this stuff alive.
  • Yes! Poetry matters - it always has and it always will. It may alter and take on different forms, but I personally love a good poem, no matter its form or style, no matter which era it came from. Poetry is the art, I feel, of expressing the soul through words, and this will never change.
  • yes, poetry is used in music. and music is still important today.ergo, poetry is important
  • I'm pursuing an MFA in creative writing, focusing on poetry, at the University of Arkansas. The MFA program here began in 1968 (I think), making it the third such program in the U.S. As of today, there are more than 400 MFA programs in the U.S. Quite an expansion in a short time. So, on an academic/professional level, yes, poetry does matter. On a personal level, I can't imagine -- and wouldn't want to -- a world in which poetry does not matter. There are just too many occasions when I've read a poem and have been so moved by it, even if I have never experienced what the poet is writing about, that I *feel* the poem. I may have butterflies in my stomach, or I may be out of breath, or I may feel tense...but, somehow, an insightful, well-crafted poem can take what it is to be human and expose it in a way we may not have seen. Put simply, to write a poem is to put words to a heartbeat.
