Hundreds of years ago we used to call a spider a 'Coppe' hence Coppewebs.The word coppe is no longer used and now we call the web a spider make a Cobweb which I suppose is much easier to pronounce.

I think the word Coppe is old English but its origins might be Anglo Saxon.The German word for spider is Spinne.
