I want to treat a friend, who doesn't have much money right now, to a nice dinner in a restaurant. How can I propose this without offending my friend?

I would just surprise them, or say that it is a celebration of what a good friend they are to you. My best friend and I have done this for years, when the other is low we will sometimes take each other out for dinner, just to celebrate that we are friends.

Don't make it like an event, that's uncomfortable. Just, say "Yo, come grab some dinner with me, fuck it, I'm paying".

Tell them to meet you at the restaurant. that you have a surprise for them. Curiosity will make them want to come. Pay the check at the end of the meal and accept no excuse from your friend to attempt to pay.

IF they are riding in your car, make a surprise detour and just do it. Say "AWWW GAWD, I'm hungry! Hey (friend) lets go somewhere to eat, my treat"
