Because in the backs of the minds of a lot of people we see the future as being overpopulated and us using our amazing minds to overcome it. Going into space, building domes in the ocean, etc.

+3 Beats me. Overpopulation is absolutely possible. There's a finite land mass and more importantly there's an even more limited land area that can sustain arable and livestock farming. Take away areas that we are polluting and making them unsuitable for agriculture and it's not too hard to imagine a point being reached when we can't feed a growing population.
