1. I would think that in the past the banks needed the money of depositors to lend to people. However with time they have come to depend on the wholesale market ie overnight or borrowing from other institutions. 2.Also may be people like you have no other choice than to put their money in these banks. If these ordinary people would invest these money then the banks would have to offer more to attract them 3. Lastly i would say that people tend to borrow more these days few people save. So the banks have little regard for them.
