From Bill Waterman's "Calvin and Hobbes" cartoon strip: To be "spiffy" is to be very cool, and in Calvin's imaginative fantasy world (one of them :-), Calvin, as Spiff, is the ultimate futuristic Spaceman - and always at war with one evil monster or another, somewhere in his galaxy. Naturally these creatures are transmogrified beings from his real world. From Calvin's perspective they are making life difficult for him, hence his transformation into Spiff and another battle against some perceived, personified monster(s), such as: His parents, his teacher or another authority figure, Suzy, .... The monster will usually appear as a dinosaur or a grotesque, alien being many times larger than poor Spiff! Long Live Spaceman Spiff!

Spiff, "interplanetary explorer extraordinaire," explores the outermost reaches of the universe ("by popular request") in a red flying saucer with a bubble canopy. Spiff wears square glasses, or goggles, whose front openings change their shape according to his emotions. The galaxy is a cruel place where Spiff is often zapped, shot down, or captured by ferocious and disgusting aliens (who, in reality, are people such as Calvin's parents, Miss Wormwood, etc.), stranded in a desert, on a planet, or both. Most planets seem devoid of civilization, and often have hostile environments or alien predators.
