  • Air because it's free of weight.
  • bench press, squat, hang clean, hang snatch, clean and jerk, military press etc. any type of weightt that is lifted and stabalized only by your body and not by a machine
  • dumbells and barbells - weights that aren't hooked up to a machine of any sort. You pick 'em up and put 'em down all by yourself. Personally, I think they're the best too.
  • weights that dont cost anything.
  • So far, brainsick_cow has the most comprehensive answer. Free weights are weights that must be MOVED AND STABILIZED by you. Machine weights are advantageous for lifters because they actually stabilize the weight and allow the lifter to focus on moveing the weight. However, free weights are superior in my opinion because you must involve secondary muscle groups in specific movements just for weight stabilization (like hitting the muscles from different angles with the same movement). If you are new to free weights, START LOW and GO SLOW. Maintain strict form with moderate muscle fatigue and progress accordingly. Happy lifting!
  • free weights are like dumbbells, barbells and etc. basically no machines like bowflexes or like a cablemachine.
