Gotham (gÅth´É™m) is a village in Nottinghamshire, England. It is also a sobriquet for New York City first used by Washington Irving in the Salmagundi Papers (1807), as a satirical reference to the tales of the "Wise fools of Gotham" told about the English village. The nickname was later appropriated by Bob Kane for Gotham City in his Batman series of comic books
