I was in elementary school in the 1950s & early 60s. Never did duck & cover drills -- never even heard of them until seeing the movie 'Atomic Cafe' in the early 80s. My school gym had a large, rotating civil defense siren perched atop it -- tested every Tuesday at 1 PM. I remember begging my parents to build a bomb shelter in the back yard in case of nuclear attack. Not that I knew anyone else who had one.
