not all venoms react the same in all species... most venoms which could kill a human can kill a house cat in a much smaller dose.... but the australian funnelweb spider can kill humans but only make cats and dogs sick, their venom is specificaly effective against primates

Probably by serial dilution. The more potent the venom, the more it can be diluted yet still produce a reaction when injected into a mouse (or whatever). Note that 'potency' refers to how much or how little of a substance is needed. Not to be confused with 'efficacy', which is how well it works.
