We have actually had this problem at our office, where the backup generators did not work and the stair lighting did not work. The main problem other than loss of work is people panicking. Being able to calmly direct people is invaluable in that situation, or appoint someone to handle it. Also not only do we have battery powered flashlights to assist with any issue, we also have Dynamo powered flashlights in every department, in case the batteries went out too we will have a source of light.

Yes, I can evacuate the building, with no problems, whatsoever. The stairs in my building run on natural gas, not electricity. I've always admired my building manager, for installing them that way. He also has a gas-poweered guitar, instead of an electric one. The only problem I have noticed with it, is that if he strums it too fast, the pilot light gets blown out, and he has to stop playing, to re-light it. +5
