Honestly - the best "free" one is windows Movie Maker that comes with XP and above. Most the freeware ones out there I have tried have been horrendously bad. Plus there is more support for movie maker. If you want something better than WMM you will probably have to purchase. If you have a Half Priced Books store in your area i would check there. I got some older software called "Movie Magic" or something along those lines for only 5$ - and it does everything I need it to.

If you are using Windows then you already have a free movie making piece of software called Windows Movie Maker or if you are using a Mac then use iMovie.

The best free is available from here http://cinelerra.org/ It knocks the pants of useless things like "Windows Movie Maker".
