This usually refers to finishing the edge of a garment so that it won't rip or fray. This is typically done by folding the edge over once or twice and then sewing it down. Hemming can also be used to change the length of a garment. To lengthen as much as extra fabric will allow or shorten as desired.

First you have to put the fabric where you want it and then take straight pins or needles and insert them into the fabric.......then out.... a little space away.
