When used with AWD or 4WD systems, the term 'Constant' means any system that is designed to constantly deliver power to both sets of driving wheels. The most common method of achieving this is through a third differential that sits in either the gearbox (AWD) or transfer case (4WD) and is connected to the front and rear propellor shafts. Other variants to the centre diff may have torque proportioning or limited slip functions, either mechanical, hydraulic or electronic. As with On Demand 4WD, most constant 4WDs have the facility to lock the centre diff to engage true 4WD for off roading.
