  • A temperament is a way to tune the notes on a scale. Many different temperaments have been used: mean tone, pythagorean, just, Werkmeister... All have their advantages and disadvantages. Some are great for chant, but lousy for 19th century keyboard music, some are good for rennaissance music, etc. Equal temperament is what you normally use in keyboard and fretted instruments: a solution that let´s you play more or less in tune in all keys. For the equal temperament scale, the frequency of each note in the chromatic scale is related to the frequency of the notes next to it by a factor of the twelfth root of 2. Thus if A is tuned to 440 Hz, Asharp would be 466.16 Hz. Hope this is useful
