  • Depends what the question is to be fair. There are a fair few knowledgeable people on AB regarding physics so not a bad place to start. There are a number of good books out there ranging from pop science to more technical stuff or if you are confident there are the technical papers. A professional physicist would be a good bet. However with something like string theory for example there are a few issues. Firstly it is a very controversial subject and furthermore it is really complex. The maths is pretty intense so getting a full understanding of the subject requires a good mathematical bent. Add to that the fact you also need a reasonably good understanding of other concepts such as quantum theory and Einstein's relativity. To really understand string theory would require a great deal of study. However for a general answer AB isn't a bad place to start as many members will eb able to give a reasonable answer and if not point you in the right direction.
  • The scientific journal publications in your libraries periodicals. If you are brave go to your local university and ask around the physics department, in my experience you will always find an enthusiastic grad student whose eager to discuss such things. You can ask here at AB or at http://www.physicsforums.com/. Also try http://focus.aps.org/ or http://www.physicscentral.com/
