  • If you're sure it's a muscle, hot baths alternating with cold compresses will help soothe it. I would also use aspirin to reduce swelling. You want to do everything you can to avoid having it seize up, which prolongs the pain until the muscle un-seizes, so if you can get a professional massage within the first 24 hours you may avoid weeks of pain. Try to keep moving and gently stretching it if at all possible. For many years doctors told you to lay down for back pain, but that was for liability reasons only and it actually extended the problem. Above all, be gentle, try to reduce stress and consciously relax the muscle. Your brain can contribute to it getting better or worse.
