Difficult to answer really. Prog rock takes influence from a wide variety of predecessor 'genres' (I don't like the term much but...). It also influenced a fair few other genres. Heavy influences on prog rock were blues, jazz, 'classical' etc. There were other non-musical influences as well particularly the art school influences of many prog rock musicians. Prog has influenced to a greater or lesser extent everything that followed/ Even its antithesis, punk was influenced by prog by means of being a backlash against perceived self-indulgent music. Closest genre today? Hard to say as it has influenced so much. The Industrial genre was heavily prog influenced (NIN in particular). Some 'indie' bands as well such as Radiohead. Avant garde acts like Mars Volta are also heavily prog influenced.
