The term "newbie" originated in the British school system, but first came into use on the net in the newsgroup talk.bizarre in the late 1980s. As documented in the jargon file (http://www.lysator.liu.se/hackdict/split2/newbie.html) it is a mostly-pejorative term used to describe a Usenet neophyte. The family that lives in the tutorial house in "The Sims" is called "Newbie" in reference to the term's use on Usenet.
