related: I saw a TV special about, mice was it? small rats? trained to run up and down the strings of a grid to detect land mines. they're too light to detonate them, so they don't get hurt, but they're trained to find them so they can be safely removed!

Further to elephants being used, the Romans used another animal to counteract this. They noticed that pig's squealing spooked elephants, so to disrupt them they would set fire to pigs (to get them to squeal) and set them among the enemy's elephants.
