Luck, usually.

There really is no technique to it. Most of it comes down to pure luck, and depending on the accident, what part of the plane they were sitting in. that probably has the biggest effect, location in relation to the crash.

It wasn't their time to go.

I believe God has a plan for all. So if you crash in a plane and you get lucky and survive then it was not what he planned for you.

I met one once. He said he knew he wasn't going to die and acted accordingly. He was one of 7 who made it ...out of 250 who didn't.

Airplane fuselages are designed to crumble gradually so the deceleration of strapped in passengers are spread over time. The passengers near the point of impact are much more likely to die than those far from it (get more braking time). I guess these days many planes have airbags too.

Same way that people survive everyday life ... when your time is up it doesn't matter where you are ... I've known 1st Sgt's getting shot up to all hell and still surviving or one piece of shrapnel killing a Marine dead. It's a mystery that only God knows. I hope that helps.
