  • The only thing that makes any real sense is a sales tax. All other taxes are to some extent regressive. But a sales tax taxes CONSUMPTION. Which is controllable by anyone. The rich would pay more, the poor wouldn't necessarily pay anything. Remember, food staples are not taxed anywhere in the US.
  • A sales tax has potential in my mind, but what worries me is state taxes in combination with a federal sales tax. In my state, NY, where taxes are already out of control, a sales tax would be scary because we already have an 8% sales tax, and an income tax. Another 10 to 15% federal sales tax on top of our state sales tax would cripple our economy worse than it already is (NY state is one of the most indebted states in the union). People would simply move, or buy nothing of real value (durable goods) in NY.
  • I'd be in favor of a higher sales tax in lieu of income tax. Just tax me once, when I spend it, and not when I receive it, or give it to someone else, or whatever. I'd also feel better knowing that people who get paid 'under the table' are still getting taxed when they buy things.
