Only to the ignorant. Most movies are remakes, gross comedies and based on comics. The highest form of the art is animated features, which are okay for the kids.

No, I think reading is very important. It stimulates the mind, expands the vocabulary, and provides a visual sense of proper spelling and grammar. I'm a writer, though, so my answer is incredibly biased.

No, but some movies get so popular that you're going to be left out of some conversations if you're the only one who hasn't seen it.

No, not at all. There is definitely value in watching movies - the right ones. They offer a perspective, and can summerise an event. However it takes a certain level of intelligence to critically examine those movies too. Movies can tell us about the writer or director - and even movies and documentaries which claim to give a real depiction of an event or theme are far from free of bias. At best, a good film can be a good supplement to books. Books, and also journal articles (which for me personally are the best source of knowledge) are far better than films. I don't see that changing given that films are made first and foremost to make money and to entertain. Academics write books for their studies - money is not a factor since they receive very little from them. They write for knowledge's sake and to get acclaim for the value of their work.

Maybe, but only if it's a documentary or a training film.
