  • Indeed, there are. The Sherriff's Department is a law enforcement feature of most U.S. counties. They are separate from the local city police and also from the state "troopers". They have some unique duties, but, of course, they work with other law enforcement agencies. And, they are elected officials, not "hired" or appointed. They hire their own deputies.
  • Yes. And they have them in the UK too, except their called High Sherrifs and they do a different kind of job.
