  • Ignorant people who can't cope with the existence of those outside their understanding often react with violence because they know of no other way to express their feelings.
  • Violence against the unknown and feared is an instinctual way of dealing with problems, and since some people abhor transsexuality, they don't lend it any cognitive time. It sucks getting beaten for something your parents hate. My old man was mormon and knocked me senseless with a table saw leg when I told him I was going pagan.
  • They are so stupid that they don`t realise they are really angry at themselves.
  • They fear what they do not understand, and they believe that if they can make young transgendered people fearful, they will change their ways. Anyone who does not conform is a threat (and, as you pointed out, the aggressor's fear may come from the suspicion that he is just like the person he hates). Of course, scare tactics are rarely effective; it only makes the person sneakier about covering their tracks.
